The first digital hospital in Central and South America and the Caribbean

Could there be a better moment than this to inaugurate a hospital built around the latest technology,at this time when Panama is beginning its transformation into a country that is grabbing the attention of many who are beginning to settle here? We are not just talking about any hospital: we are talking about the recently inaugurated Punta Pacífica

Hospital, strategically located in Punta Pacifica which is one of the most important development centers in Panama. It has acquired special significance through its affiliation with Baltimore ’s Johns Hopkins Hospital. To give you an idea of what this implies,Johns Hopkins was named the number one hospital in the United States
by News &World Report in each of the last fourteen years, and only two other hospitals in the world are privileged to have achieved an affiliation with this prestigious institution. This affiliation obliges it to maintain the highest standards of quality and to keep both equipment and patient treatment continually up to date.

With its enviable state of the art technology, the best equipment and highly trained personnel, this hospital has become the first of its class in all Central and South America and the Caribbean.Seven intensive care units designed for personalized and attentive care, three semi-intensive care units, three dialysis units, one isolation ward, eight neo-natal intensive care beds,a neonatal ward with twenty cots, two delivery rooms designed so that family members can be present at the birth, three labor rooms and four intelligent operating theaters are complemented by 64 rooms and fourteen suites to accommodate potential patients from across the region.

It goes without saying that all the furniture, decoration and lighting, including the finishes for the floors, walls and ceilings are specially designed for hospitals. For instance all beds and gurneys use Stryker technology and anti-allergenic fabrics. All ventilation and air conditioning ducts were specially designed to avoid any risk of contamination.Throughout the length and breadth of the facility it is obvious that the guiding principle in the construction and fitting out was:maximize safety, minimize risks.

Most surprising of all is that for the same tariffs as other hospitals in the city, this hospital offers all these benefits. For example, the nurses have mobile computerized equipment and wireless laptops enabling them not only to monitor the patient records but also to schedule the times for administering medicines, through alarms that sound in the nursing center. The “virtual doctor ” allows the doctor to access the patient ’s records and even to communicate with the patient through is computer from the other side of the world,as if the doctor were at
the patient ’s bedside. In other words,we feel as if we are in a hospital of the future, and in reality,we are.

Furthermore, there is a general medical center that offers all the medical disciplines such as gynecology, surgery, pediatrics, oncology, cardiology among others. Now doctors can link into the hospital ’s own
network through their computers and get a clear digital view of X-rays and other clinical records.Among the leading edge technology can also be found mobile video-conferencing which allows patients to be in touch both with their doctors and at the same time, with doctors at Johns Hopkins.Dr.Juan A.Carbone commented:“Now we are going to be able to make assisted operations.”

The use of such technology could sound cold, but among the values of the Punta Pacífica Hospital is that before everything else, the patient should be treated as a person.Consistent with this objective, close family members are able to stay with patients in intensive care.In this way, medicine is given a human face which allows both patients and those closest to them,to stay together in an environment that is closer, less cold and more human. As Drs.

Carmen Amada Pinzón and Moisés Zebede say:“This is one way of reducing the stress that comes from being hospitalized, both for the patient as well as for family members. We want medical treatment that has a human face and is accessible to those who enter this institution.”

The human capital that is committed to the care of patients is made up of the 300 specialist doctors trained in the world ’s best universities, 200 nurses and some 150 administrative staff, all of whom must renew their accreditation each year with Johns Hopkins. This requires continuous education which, thanks to video conferencing, enables them to attend training seminars. This is the caliber that is required in order to provide the quality of care that is now available in a city with the profile of the center of the Americas:Panama. And from now
on we won ’t just be talking about residential tourism, but also about health care tourism. What better moment to welcome an institution of this caliber,of which we should all feel more than proud.
