Novel mechanical technology in the SEAT range

The latest model to join the SEAT range, the Altea XL, is also the first to offer the new 140HP 2.0 TDI engine, which is completely new to this Spanish manufacturer. The new 2.0 TDI uses direct fuel injection already known in other SEAT engines, which has been incorporated into a completely new technology platform with many improvements. The block has now a more compact design, taking up less space in the engine compartment. On the other hand, by changing the positions of the counter-rotating shafts renders into a reduction of vibration, which increases acoustical comfort.

The turbo and the new engine management system deliver an even quicker response and at lower revs, contributing at the same time to a more progressive flow of the torque. The Altea XL has a top speed of 205 kph, accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 10.6 seconds and delivers 51km to the gallon in the urban cycle and 82 km to the gallon under freeway conditions. So the Altea XL with the 2.0 TDI unit is well positioned as an interesting diesel alternative; it includes some excellent features, improved fuel consumption while also providing an excellent driving experience.

The 140 HP Altea XL 2.0 TDI is only sold in the Sport-up package, and comes with firmer suspension which is more suited to the car’s power and features without the sport thrill striving with the foolproof active security. The geometry of the McPherson front suspension incorporates springs placed at an optimum working angle and rigid “silent blocks”, which provide excellent stability in all conditions.
The rear train uses multi-arm suspension. Four arms (three transverse and one longitudinal) control the steering, with really exceptional dynamic and comfort attributes. Seat’s Active Chassis (DSR) also delivers greater control and speed of reaction, which translates into a noticeable improvement in safety. The steering response on the Altea XL is incredibly quick with minimum lateral movement, which helps to counteract the natural trend of a car with a relatively high center of gravity when cornering.

And finally, this model of Altea XL includes ESP (electronic stability control) + DSR. Combined with EBA (emergency brake assistance), this increases braking pressure in an emergency bringing the full system capacity into play, while also activating the vehicle’s emergency lights.

The Altea XL’s most outstanding attributes are its high levels of internal comfort, as well as the flexibility of the passenger compartment and, of course, the generous sized trunk.
You can also move the rear seats 14 cm forward, thereby increasing the volume of the trunk by more than 100 liters, to a total of 635 liters. The interior of the Sport-up version features sports seats with specially designed upholstery, two zone air conditioning, radio CD MP3 with aux-in, eight speakers and steering wheel mounted controls, light and rain sensor, tire pressure sensor, cruise control and onboard computer, flexible rear shelf, etc. Safety is assured with six airbags as standard, stability control (ESP), Driving Steering Recommendation and emergency brake assistance (EBA), ABS + TCS, and Isofix anchoring points for child seats. The car also has a comprehensive list of optional extras, including a dynamic navigation system with 6.5” color or monochrome screen, Bluetooth telephone, bi-xenon direction indicators + AFS, side airbags for the rear seats and an iPod or USB connection both for MP3 players and portable memory devices such as “Pen drives”.

The vehicle’s exterior is distinguished by Zenith 17” wheels with 225/45 tires, Elox colored roof bars, fog lamps and rear view mirrors colored to match the bodywork, together with parking, electrical and heating features.
In summary, this is an excellent choice that is well worth a look, at this time when compact cars are experiencing such a resurgence.
