This apartment could not be described as large, but its success lies in the well defined and generous distribution of space, and the whole design suggests parallels with both Caribbean and modern styling.
The apartment is approached by a rather unusual curved passage way, where works of art by important artists such as Aguilar Ponce and Chon Neto are displayed, and a slender sculpture by Susana Arias occupies a niche. By this time you get the feeling that this is no ordinary apartment.
The passage way brings us to the imposing kitchen door, which boasts a unique design. From here the spacious interior of the apartment unfolds before us, with a ceiling height of 3.30 meters, fluid, well ventilated spaces overflowing with light. The space distribution is along the lines of a modern apartment with the kitchen opening onto the dining room, living room and terrace, facilitating a free flow of personal interaction. Characterized by a fluid elegance, the continuity of the apartment’s various areas is enhanced by the uniformity of the materials used. The floor for example uses multicolored stone combined with wood. The internal doors are of mahogany.
The large picture windows flood the space with light and the spectacular views provide another dimension to the apartment. Sliding doors provide access onto the generous terrace, and the views over the Panama Canal call to mind the early years of the twentieth century when evenings were spent enjoying the neighborhood. Eaves, which are such an important architectural feature in a hot and humid climate like ours, provide protection against torrential rainfall and the fierce rays of the sun. And in the distance, day and night, you can always see the ocean going ships waiting their turn to make the crossing from ocean to ocean.
By contrast, the two bedrooms are intimate and welcoming. Drawing the eye back to the apartment’s interior, these rooms represent another decorative feature. Here walls are colored to blend with the furnishings, ornaments and artworks by Olga Sinclair, creating a warm and atmosphere that induces peace. The well proportioned bathrooms are variously finished in tile and marble which combine with the fittings to project subtle elegance.
To summarize, this apartment, now finished, has turned out to be an idyllic location looking over the Panama Canal. |
