What could be more perfect for a gardener than to stay at a hotel with gardens when traveling?   I know there are many such hotels here in Panama but we will focus on one such hotel in the beautiful town of Boquete.

Located at the foot of Volcano Barú, Boquete offers tourists a chance to get away from the heat, to enjoy the natural beauty of birding (and if you are lucky you may see the glorious Quetzal), or trekking through the rainforest, or visiting the many fincas that produce not only some of the best coffees you will ever taste, but the volcanic soil also makes it possible to grow exotic fruits and many types of vegetables.

When you arrive at the Panamonte you are seeing history.  The quaintness and charm envelope you and the personal attention and ambiance are warm and comforting.  It is the only full service Inn in Boquete.  Since 1914 it has been run by the Collins family and hosted many travelers including Richard Nixon, Teddy Roosevelt and Ingrid Bergman in its 16 renovated guest rooms. I could just imagine Teddy sitting in the fireside lounge discussing the Panama Canal with guests and local residents.   The restaurant is a ‘must dine at restaurant’ serving the bounty of the area including incredible seafood dishes by award-winning chef Charlie Collins.   This restaurant is open to both guests and tourists and I can tell you from personal experience that the food and attention to presentation alone is worth the drive!

Boquete is a rich agricultural center often referred to at the “Breadbasket of Panama.”  In 1946, Hans and Vera Elliot purchased the Panamonte Inn.  Hans went on to purchase the Hacienda La Esmeralda farm and in 1964 it was sold to another Swede and today produces the famous ‘Geisha’ coffee.  Vera had the gardens planted with begonias, hibiscus, camellias, mango trees, impatiens and tall pines as the ‘frame’ of the beautiful picture perfect Inn.  From the moment you park your car you are surrounded by the beauty of the plant material.  From the geraniums that greet you as you enter to a stroll around the gardens, the Inn will definitely sooth your soul and relaxes you.  If you need further relaxation, the New Haven Spa on the premises has the most wonderful foot massages.  The next morning, be sure to get out and explore, for this little town has some incredible gems to discover!  For more information or to book a stay at the Panamonte, call 720.1324 or email reservation@panamonteinnandspa.com.   www.panamonte.com
