Just when high end auto buffs thought that BMW, one of the most popular brands in this category, had no more surprises to offer, the German design house came up with the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé.
We are talking about the BMW X6, which represents a completely new interpretation of the typical properties and design attributes of the grand coupé. These properties are evident both in the engine’s technical specification as well as the design of the bodywork and interior finishes, which are ample proof that we are in the presence of a car unique in its class.
The first thing you notice about the X6 is its aerodynamic design that gives it a sporty appearance. Its clean lines and air intakes give it a strong, substantial and even muscular feel, and speak of a car that is robust, unbeatable, and able to deal with any obstacle that comes across its path.
However, this model also manages to delight with refined lines, thanks to its elongated profile which is typical of the coupé design, its smooth, glazed surfaces and side panels that sweep gracefully down to the wheel arches. It would not be exaggerating to say that the BMW X6 is a tough guy that oozes glamour and style.
These first impressions are confirmed when you check out the vehicle’s technical details, featuring BMW’s electronic xDrive intelligent traction system which continuously distributes traction between both axles. The car also features a Dynamic Performance Control system that enables variable traction distribution between the rear wheels. These two systems combine to increase the precision of the car’s steering and improve handling, both at high speed and under normal conditions.
So what does this mean in practice? In simple terms, the vehicle will corner at high speed with incredible smoothness, and sharp movements of the steering wheel will not result in any loss of stability whatsoever. Traction is also improved when driving over slippery or irregular surfaces and all of these advantages translate into a high degree of driver safety.
You cannot talk cars without also talking engines and this is particularly true for the BMW X6. It is equipped with a new 4.4 liter Twin Turbo eight cylinder V8 gasoline drive unit with direct fuel injection, producing 300 kw/407 HP. The engine’s power speaks for itself and the manufacturer assures us that this is the most powerful engine so far in the BMW X range. The most surprising thing about this addition is that, in spite of its power it is incredibly simple and compact in design.
The BMW X6’s interior is marked by the perfect combination of luxury, distinctive shapes and a sports feel and dynamic that even the most demanding of drivers will find irresistible.
Whether you are on the highway or driving over more demanding terrain, you will find that the detailing, such as the knee supports on the sides of the central console, the paddles on the sports steering wheel and the clear instrumentation, give the model a unique and distinctive personality.
The seats are unmistakably part of the BMW X series line, higher than normal so the driver’s position at the wheel ensures he is always safely in control. By contrast, the rear seats in the X6 are different from other vehicles in the range as rather than being joined together, they are separated by a central console.
The X6 also incorporates other changes from its predecessors, reinforcing its uniqueness. For example, its sports steering wheel features manual gear change paddles, complemented by the floor mounted automatic gear shift bar. This allows the driver to opt for the most appropriate gear change technology for the conditions. The wheel also incorporates controls for the telephone and audio systems.
The BMW X6 is also not short on gadgets to delight technology lovers. These include an MP3 capable CD player, guaranteeing hours of musical accompaniment. There is also a USB port, multi channel audio system, active ventilation in the seats and a DVD system in the rear.
These features, together with the powerful engine, ensure that the X6 has become BMW’s newest spoiled child, which is just perfect for aficionados of the brand and will convince them that there is no end to the surprises that BMW has in store.
