Coral Lodge

A Caribbean Paradise
Por KJ Comrie

On the shores of the delightful, sky blue waters of the Caribbean Sea between the Costa Arriba of Colon and the Comarca of Kuna Yala, you will find the cabañas of the Coral Lodge hotel, a tourist
complex which, to quote the owner David Wroughton, catch the eye of anyone looking for an exclusive atmosphere while keeping in touch with nature.

The hotel perfectly combines culture and relaxation and receives constant enquiries both from local tourists as well as North American and European visitors interested in getting to know the natural attractions of the isthmus. The best way to get there is to take a plane from Albrook airport to Porvenir, the “capital” of the Comarca of Kuna Yala. You will be met by hotel staff and receive a guided tour of the closest Kuna communities, followed by a gourmet open air picnic. The complex covers a total of 7 hectares and its simple but elegant buildings welcome you with features typical of tropical architecture: spacious cabañas built out over the sea, hammocks gently rocked by sea breezes, decks where you can enjoy the sun and thatched roofs inspired by Kuna houses.

The cabañas combine rustic styling and simplicity with comfort and relaxation, providing luxury and privacy. Each one has its own Jacuzzi and is elegantly furnished in rattan.

Since its soft opening in 2004, the Inn has offered its guests the chance to drop out of the daily grind and get in touch with nature. This has no doubt contributed to it becoming an ideal destination for couples who enjoy its gorgeous romantic sunsets, and it is also the perfect spot for professionals looking for a peaceful, healthy environment.

For lovers of the sea there is kayaking through the bays and channels among the mangroves as well as scuba diving, snorkeling and visits to the Cocuye coral reserve which is a reef described by the Smithsonian Institute as having a rich variety of coral species and is only 10 minutes by boat from the hotel. There are also nature trails for those who prefer their adventures on dry land. The intention of the hotel’s owner is that the complex should grow in harmony with its natural surroundings. This month (November) they plan to open a new scuba center and have future plans for an ecological protection zone to help reduce the problem of logging in the forest.

The hotel offers all the comforts of home and imaginative cuisine combining typical Panamanian elements with Asian influences and international themes. The Peruvian Chef Renzo Alcántara
uses natural ingredients to create innovative dishes such as“Almojábanas chiricanas al pesto” [deep fried ground maize with pesto sauce] flavored with fresh basil and spicy mayonnaise, and “Langostinos crocantes con quinua”, [crispy prawns with quinoa] fried and presented with a sauce of yellow peppers and orange with candied garlic potatoes puree.

The Coral Lodge is also one of the local destinations which has caught the eye of politicians and local celebrities. Wroughton believes that they are attracted mainly by the beach cabañas. We think that as you enjoy the atmosphere of wistful romance and the special quality of light that

accompanies nightfall, sipping one of Alcántara’s cocktail, you could be in Paradise.
