New Year Resolutions

By Donna Dawson
New Year Resolutions New Year Resolutions New Year Resolutions

We all seem to use this time of year to make new resolutions, new goals and new plans.  Why? A new start perhaps, a new happiness that there is a new year ahead of us to make a difference.  There are as many reasons as there are people so I am going to share with you some of mine.  First a bit about me if I may.  I am a Master Gardener.  I took my training in Alberta, Canada in 1995.  I started my website www.icangarden.com in 1996 and started my garden tours in 1998.  We love living here and are very grateful that Panama has accepted us.  Now, a few of my resolutions for the coming year.

To see more of this beautiful country and to respect it.   I have lived here just over two years and am astounded at its beauty but am saddened to see so many areas where people just do not see its beauty and use it as a refuse dump.  Not only is this an eyesore for tourists, but it is also prime breeding grounds.  There is a river that flows white styrofoam containers and cups every time it rains where we live!  I realize that there are reasons for this, but would hope that it would start with just one person trying to make a difference.  There is one person, Judith Tovar who is trying.  She has used her own money and printed up bumper stickers saying “Keep Your Panama Clean”  you can get your own sticker by calling 6617-4122 and help her with a donation to print some more!  Every penny she gets go right back out in printing these.  It all starts with one person…

To help more animals in distress – we look after three strays right now with food and medical attention, but also contribute to a couple other organizations, a shelter in Arraijan (maripily29@hotmail.com) and Spay Panama.  These groups are so in need of your support and I know how easy it is to forget about them when you are tucked away inside your gated communities – don’t forget about them.  It is not their fault that there so many, but with proper education those numbers can be reduced and those living will have a better quality of life.  You can access Spay/Panama at http://www.spaypanama.org/  The Spay/Panama 2009 calendar is their major fundraising event to help them reach more animals. It goes for $5 and 100% of the proceeds go towards the animals.   All the animals in the calendar were rescued and placed in good homes.  Buy them and give them to your friends.

To support more local growers because we know that if we do, not only do we get good food, but we support and help the country grow.  Eat more fresh fruit and vegetables that are grown by people who love their land and only want to improve their own lives.

I know some parts of the country were devastated by the recent floods but homes and lives will be rebuilt, stronger and better prepared for the future.  In the meantime,  support them by visiting these areas.  Don’t forget their special events that take place.  Support them and help them rebuild their lives.  Visit their markets.

It all happens with one person at a time.  While you are out and about, please take the time to also enjoy the flora that surrounds you – just imagine what this country would be like if it didn’t exist.
